THE PLAYSCAPE PAVILION
ACSA 2025 DESIGN COMPETITION - WORLD EXPO, OSAKA, JAPAN
What if a building could remember everyone who passed through it?
The Playscape Pavilion serves as a welcoming gateway to the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan — but it quickly becomes something more personal. Visitors are invited to step inside, craft something by hand, and attach it to the pavilion's shipping container walls by magnet. Over the course of the Expo, the structure transforms into a living collage of human expression, shaped by everyone who passes through.
The space itself is flexible by design. Movable furniture allows the pavilion to shift between an open workshop and a lecture venue, continuously adapting to the people using it. The entire structure ships from Sacramento to Osaka and back within two standard metal containers, assembled on-site from a kit of parts.
In keeping with the ACSA's commitment to slave-free and transparent supply chains, all materials were sourced locally and curated so the designers can have full confidence and knowledge of their origin.
