“Metamorphic” describes a process of transformation in which a material or organism undergoes pressure, change, and recombination to form something new. In architecture, metamorphic becomes a conceptual framework for reimagining existing structures not as fixed objects, but as evolving matter.

The existing pre-engineered metal building becomes the “raw material” for a metamorphic transformation. Instead of treating the building as a static whole, I break it down into its elemental components: rigid frames, purlins, columns, and girts, exposing the underlying skeleton. These pieces are then disassembled, reorganized, and recombined with newly fabricated frames that mimic the salvaged geometry. The result is a new structure that carries the memory of the original but lives on as something entirely different.

Like metamorphic rock, which forms through heat and pressure, the new architecture is shaped through the “forces” of programmatic need, spatial ambition, and reassembly. The project does not erase the past; it adapts, reworks, and transforms it into a new form. The old frames provide the DNA. The new configuration provides the evolution. In some moments, concrete footings lift portions of the salvaged frames, giving them new posture and new purpose. This vertical shift mirrors geological uplift: pressure creates new heights, new alignments, new possibilities. The concrete becomes the tectonic force that enables transformation.

“Metamorphic” becomes a way of seeing the building not as demolition waste, but as a living organism capable of change. The new building is not designed in spite of the old parts, but because of them. Their constraints, shapes, mismatches, and imperfections drive the creative process. The structure becomes the blueprint for its own transformation.

In this sense, Metamorphic frames the project as an architectural act of becoming through adaptation, reuse, and continual transformation.
